About the team/job

As a part of the new EMBL-Programme starting in 2022, the transversal research theme Planetary Biology aims to understand, from the molecular to the population level, how microbes, plants, and animals respond to each other and to their environment. TREC (Transversing European Coastlines) is an ambitious Planetary Biology lighthouse project in collaboration with EMBL member states’ scientists and institutions that will sample and study the land-water interface of coastal ecosystems and the impact of various environmental factors such as pollution and changes in climate. EMBL aims to develop mobile services that will: i) support TREC scientists with all equipment and technology needed to preserve and process samples at the sampling sites as well as techniques to monitor environmental and geochemical parameters and ii) give local access and support to EMBL’s member states scientists to multidisciplinary cutting-edge technologies such as advanced light and electron microscopy and multi-omics methods.

We are looking for an Operational Manager who will help to develop and run the mobile services and coordinate them during TREC. The successful candidate will be involved in the recruitment of additional team members. This position is ideally suited for an applicant who is looking for a full position in a dynamic team immersed in EMBL’s collaborative, interdisciplinary and culturally diverse research environment and has the potential to develop into a service team leader position. 

Your role

  • Development of a service team
  • Selection, implementation and daily management of the technologies provided by the mobile services in collaboration with TREC stakeholders
  • Development of standardised sampling protocols with TREC scientists
  • Interaction with Member States users, which involves training of the advanced technologies offered by Mobile Services
  • Travelling during the expeditions to support the services team on site 

You have

  • PhD in life sciences
  • Experience in field sampling, setting up sampling expeditions
  • Extensive experience in supporting scientific teams and scientific activities
  • Experience in providing scientific services in one or more of the following fields: multi-omics, eDNA, fluorescence microscopy, sample preparation for (cryo) electron microscopy
  • Flexibility to travel extensively (mostly within Europe) to support sampling teams during field work activities
  • Excellent time management skills, highly organized
  • Very good problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to adapt to changing work conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent proficiency in English (both written and verbal) 

You might also have

  • Environmental / field sampling research background
  • Experience in public engagement and outreach events
