We are pleased to offer an opportunity to join a cutting-edge project “Bayesian Agent-based Population Studies: Transforming Simulation Models of Human Migration”, funded by the European Research Council (www.baps-project.eu), for a three-month piece of work related to interviewing and carrying out a qualitative survey of asylum seekers and refugees in Europe.

The aim of our project is to develop a simulation model of international migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their social networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. In the modelling process, we are using Bayesian statistical principles to design innovative computer simulations, and to learn about the way the simulated agents make decisions through cognitive experiments.

Experience of qualitative research and primary data collection in the area of refugee studies, experience of working in an interdisciplinary team, and knowledge of the principles of research ethics are also essential attributes. Track record of peer reviewed publications will be an additional advantage.

This research position will be based in the Department of Social Statistics and Demography, within the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, at the University of Southampton.  You will work closely with the project team, Prof. Jakub Bijak (project lead) and other team members, on the tasks directly relevant to the interviews and survey work.  There will be also an opportunity to work with other, related teams at the University, such as the Centre for Transnational Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
