We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate as part of an international consortium to discover innovative new strategies to combat rising antimicrobial resistance.

The horizontal transfer of plasmids carrying antibiotic resistance genes plays a key role in the spread of antibiotic resistance. We are recruiting a 3yr postdoctoral researcher to study the impact of phage therapy on the transfer of conjugative plasmids within and between species of enteric bacteria using experimental approaches. The postholder will test the impact of antibiotic exposure, bacterial community composition and co-evolution on the efficacy of anti-conjugation phage therapy using in vitro lab experiments combined with genome resequencing. We will tackle this problem using established model systems and novel phage that have activity against plasmids that spread high-risk AMR genes in one-health settings.

This project will be carried out as part of MOB-TARGET, a JPI-AMR funded project that will bring together a consortium of researchers from the UK, France, Germany, Spain and China to develop novel strategies to combat mobile antibiotic resistance. The postholder will be based in the lab of Craig MacLean (Oxford), but will collaborate closely with the groups of Michael Brockhurst (Manchester), Tao He (Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences), and will engage extensively with the broader MOB-TARGET consortium.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for ambitious researchers who are interested in applying ecological and evolutionary approaches to combat antibiotic resistance as part of an international and interdisciplinary team. The postholder will be embedded in a large community of microbial ecology and evolution researchers in Oxford and Manchester, and will be encouraged to develop new lines of research and collaborations within the MOB-TARGET consortium.
