The post holder will report to the Deputy Head of Student Services. They will have a key role in upholding all Student Support systems and will support students within the learning environment to assist their academic, intellectual, social and emotional development.
The post holder will ensure all students’ learning support needs are met and that each student completes their studies and achieves to the highest level and progress. With their specialist skills, and through collaborative working across Student Services and the academic team, they will contribute to our goals of high student satisfaction, achievement and employability.
The post holder will have substantial experience as a practitioner supporting students with specific learning difficulties and, ideally, a professional qualification in this field. They will be able to interpret and communicate psychologists’ reports and will have detailed knowledge of funding available to disabled students in Higher Education. The post holder will also be able to plan and deliver study skills workshops and contribute to staff and tutor training.
Essential Criteria for Applicant
• Computer literate with an excellent knowledge of Excel and Word
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels
• Experience of working in a learning support role
• Knowledge of learning difficulties, differences and disabilities such as dyslexia, Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, visual impairment
• Experience of providing study support and a good understanding of academic work required in FE and HE
• Strong writing, research and referencing skills
• A good knowledge of Safeguarding in educational settings
Desirable Criteria for Applicant
• Qualification in learning support, educational psychology, teaching or counselling
• Experience of working within Further or Higher Education
• Knowledge of funding and support available to disabled students in Higher Education
• Experience of working with exam rules and regulations
• Musical knowledge (theory, transcription, sight-reading)
• Ability to assess for learning difficulties
Providing support to the Deputy Head of Student Services and working with other cross-college staff to ensure that support systems and processes effectively meet the needs of students. Providing specialist support to any student needing learning support, academic and pastoral assistance.
a) Production and maintenance of registers and attendance monitoring databases
a) Enrolling and maintaining student data on Unit-e and all other relevant databases
b) Reporting on attendance, retention and achievement when requested and assisting the Head of Student Services in the production of data-based reports
2. Student Support
a) Note-taking in classes
b) Providing 1-to-1 tutorials to assist in planning student’s workload and organisational skills
c) Providing student mentorship when needed
d) Tutorials where necessary, both pastoral and attendance and referring students on to external bodies when appropriate
e) Preparation of Individual Learning plans for students and assessment of support needs
f) Keeping in contact with external agencies to provide support to students
g) Work closely with external Learning Support staff (e.g. Local Authorities) to ensure students with learning needs receive the appropriate support
h) Student, Tutor and Parent contact point in office
i) Working with Course Leaders and Academic staff to ensure students satisfaction remains high
j) Maintaining confidentiality, and informing Head of SS of any serious issues
k) Liaising with DSA to assist students in set up and provision of support and funding
l) Communicating learning support needs and classroom requirements to tutors when consent to share is given
m) Providing training to staff and tutors when appropriate
n) Ensuring safeguarding policies are upheld
a) Liaising with Examinations Officer and relevant Course Leader to ensure students are achieving at their highest potential and collating recommended examination support arrangements
b) Providing Examinations officer with requirements and examination support arrangements in advance of assessments
c) Working in an examination assistant/scribe role for any students with visual impairment or other disabilities
d) Assisting in notifying students of exam times, feedback tutorials, and any/all other relevant information
e) Informing students of resubmissions, re-sits or sits of work and if necessary, chasing them by telephone, email and letter to hand in
f) Data entry of examination and assessment grades, including end of year SRFs (where appropriate)
g) Exam invigilating when required
h) Assisting in any other administration of exams
a) Maintenance of student files
b) Updating BIMM policies and procedures on an annual basis, including the Student Handbook
c) Covering Reception duties when needed
d) Working alongside other Student Services staff to provide general support for students
e) Assisting with archiving all student data both electronically and physically
f) Minuting meetings when required
g) Assisting with BIMM Events as required, such as Open Days, Parents Evenings, Enrolment etc.
NB: This is not a complete statement of all duties and responsibilities of this post. The Deputy Head of Student Services may be required to carry out other duties in keeping with the nature of the post as directed by, and agreed with the Head of Student Services.
