Our academics are shaping the future of our discipline with world-leading research that spans all aspects of archaeology, from the local to the global and the social to scientific. Our distinctive approach to research-led teaching ensures our programmes are cutting edge and intellectually stimulating for our 400+ students, while our state-of the art laboratories specializing in environmental archaeology, materials analysis, artefact conservation, isotopes, DNA, microscopy, informatics, human remains, and luminescence dating support our staff and students in achieving outstanding and original research at all levels.

We are building upon our strengths by appointing a talented and ambitious Assistant Professor in Zooarchaeology. Expanding our current research and teaching strengths in archaeological science, the new postholder will develop world-class research and teaching in the fields of zooarchaeology and environmental archaeology. We welcome applications from those with active laboratory/field-based collaborative projects that address fundamental archaeological research questions in any part of the world. We are particularly eager to hear from applicants who can build on and extend our existing geographic and time-period coverage, who can contribute to our existing projects as well as developing their own, who are field –active, and/or who have an interest in experimental or ethnographic approaches to archaeology and archaeological science.

The successful candidate will pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, commensurate with the Department of Archaeology’s continuing emphasis on international excellence and demonstrated by outstanding publications. They will bring experience and ambition in terms of seeking out national and international funding opportunities and develop research impact beyond the Institution. They will develop and pursue international research collaborations to further enhance the Department’s global reputation in archaeological science. They will also help develop our vibrant research postgraduate community by attracting students of exceptional calibre from Britain and abroad to study with us at Durham.

Bringing excellent communication skills and teaching experience, the successful candidate will take the lead on delivering and developing our BSc Archaeology, increasing its profile and recruitment, and they will curate, expand, use, and increase access to our internationally renowned zooarchaeological reference collection. They will develop our zooarchaeological teaching across our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, contributing to the MSc in Bioarchaeology and developing a specific MSc pathway in Zooarchaeology, and will explore the potential for research and teaching collaboration with other departments and research centres in Durham University, as well as external organisations. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the collegial and administrative activities of the Department and demonstrate leadership within an academic context.
