Applications are invited for a full-time Research Assistant to work on establishing a structure-function relationship between biomolecular condensates and protein degradation in the lab of Dr. Janet Kumita, Department of Pharmacology, University of Cambridge (funded by a MRC Career Development Award). We are using protein engineering to create proteins that can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation to study how the physico-chemical properties of these biomolecular condensates can promote protein degradation within the cell. The successful candidate will be involved in designing and purifying these novel proteins and studying their biophysical characteristics, including their ability to phase separate. They will also investigate protein-protein interactions using ITC, SPR and fluorescence anisotropy assays.

Applicants should have a B.Sc. in an area relevant to the project, with knowledge of molecular biology (for example: construct design, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis), experience in recombinant protein expression and purification (AKTA purification systems, IMAC, SEC, IEX) and a keen and proactive approach to collaborative science. The ability to plan, execute and record scientific studies and make independent decisions and solve routine problems encountered in research projects is essential, as are excellent verbal and written communication. Additionally, the post-holder will be involved in the set-up and management of the laboratory (including maintaining lab documents, ordering, maintenance of equipment). 

The funds for this post are available until 31st December 2026. The salary range as Research Assistant is £27,116-£31,406 per annum.
