This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest departments within the University of Oxford and one of the leading Physics departments in the world.

We are looking for a Database Administrator to support and improve the efficiency of the administration of the department, in particular supporting the Teaching Faculty, HR and financial administration. They will work with other members of the team who support Web and Databases to ensure there are no single points of failure for system support.

The current infrastructure is largely based on MS Windows SQL Server. Although the development and maintenance of the databases will take place within this framework, user interfaces will generally be web based and capable of supporting a wide range of web browsers to ensure platform independence. In addition, considerable data migration between systems goes on, and this needs developing and managing. The post holder will be required to work closely with the academics and administration teams to enable solutions to their problems.

The post-holder will report to the head of IT. The post-holder will provide support for broader applications according to workload peaks across the department. The physics IT team provides support for all general services such as desktop computing, laptops, networking, service infrastructure etc.

The successful candidate will need to have extensive experience of Microsoft SQL Server, including SSIS and SSRS, and database management including backup and restoration, including database design, implementation, and management. Excellent problem solving and communication skills and experience in working with business users and other colleagues to capture, analyse and document information about data. Ability to organise a busy and varied workload. Experience of using at least one programming language and writing database queries to interrogate, analyse and manipulate data. Microsoft Access and VBA are also essential.
