Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join Imperial College London’s new Student Mental Health Intervention Team that works as part of a main specialist service supporting all Imperial students. You will be fully supported and work with and across this multi-disciplinary service to support Imperial students and staff and will be responsible to the Head of Student Counselling & Mental Health Advice Service and report into the Deputy Head of Service.

The Student Mental Health Intervention Team will facilitate the identification, investigation, and assessment of students where there is concern for their wellbeing. The team will facilitate and monitor interventions for students who may be struggling emotionally or psychologically, or who may present a risk to their health, wellbeing, themselves, or those around them.

The SMHIO posts will enable us to improve the student and staff experience through investigation, assessment, and management of appropriate and proportionate interventions. This team will also deliver training, consultancy and assistance to Imperial College staff, especially academic and key support staff, promoting confidence and empowering them to raise issues and support students appropriately.

Engaging positively with subject matter experts, staff and external partners will be important, as will working collaboratively to support both our students and staff who are responding to presenting or emerging situations. Developing and nurturing partnerships with external agencies and services will be instrumental in securing external referral pathways to support students whose needs fall outside the capability of the College.

The successful candidate will be exposed to a high volume of serious wellbeing and safeguarding concerns and will therefore require high resilience to this type of exposure and interaction.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Promote a culture of managing risk and reporting concern where there are incidents of disruptive behaviour.
  • Mentor and guide colleagues across the College in recognising and appropriately referring or supporting vulnerable students. Liaising where appropriate with internal staff such as Registry, Senior Faculty Tutors and academic staff, Faculty Wellbeing Advisers, Welfare staff, SVLO’s, Student Services staff, SU welfare staff, Student Hub, Hall Wardening Teams and Security staff.  Promoting early identification and subsequently prevention of issues by coordinating a college wide response to students whose behaviour is a potential risk to themselves or the College community.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance on the management of vulnerable students and those in crisis, working with others to balance the safety and wellbeing of the student and the wider College community
  • Work with relevant service areas to investigate specific student issues either reported or emerging, creating recommendations for service development.

Essential requirements

  • You will be at Degree level in a relevant area i.e. Social Work (Mental Health), Mental Health Nursing, Clinical Psychology or a DBT Practitioner.
  • A proven track-record in short term interventions, risk management, threat assessment and safeguarding vulnerable people.
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within specialist discipline to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
  • Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative to recommend practical solutions to resolve problems with a range of circumstances.
