Applications are sought for an exciting opportunity as Head of School of the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy & Art History (DHPA). The University of Aberdeen is ranked in the top 20 in the UK in both the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 and the Guardian University Guide 2022. Globally, the University is consistently ranked among the top 200 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and also ranks 12th in the UK and 57th globally in the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
The School is a research-intensive unit engaged in world-leading research and first-class education. Our ambition is to advance knowledge in our research and teaching fields and create a range of beneficial societal impacts. The incoming Head of School will work with leaders across our disciplines to advance this ambition.
The School is highly ranked. For example, in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, History ranks 17th (out of 88), Art History 8th (out of 24), Philosophy 19th (out of 42) in 2022, while Divinity is ranked 9th (out of 29) in the UK in the Complete University Guide. The QS World University Rankings 2022 placed Divinity 31st worldwide, and 6th in the UK.
The School is one of twelve in the University and is located in Old Aberdeen. By headcount the School comprises 67 academics, 10 administrative staff and over 300 PhD students. By full-time equivalent, we have around 997 students in total, 743 undergraduates, 193 PGR and 30 PGT.
Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant subject and be dynamic, collegial, and creative, with outstanding communication skills, and ambition to lead the School towards fulfilling the University’s Aberdeen 2040 strategic aims. We welcome applicants with a background in any of the School’s disciplines areas.

The Head of School appointment is for five years in the first instance and is made subject to the usual terms and conditions of employment of the University. An additional honorarium payment for headship applies over and above the academic salary.
