The unique set of properties exhibited by 2D materials suggested significant enhancements over traditional fillers in many composites. Of particular interest, graphene has shown obvious advantageous over other nanomaterials as a reinforcement filler for metallic matrix composites. The properties enhancement is more pronounced when there is a bond between the matrix and the additive. The aim of the project is to develop the next generation metallic matrix composites with high strength and high conductivity that can replace the conventional alloys in several aerospace, electronics, and electric power applications.
The student will develop and design the fabrication route of the graphene-metal nanocomposite with controlled microstructure and composition. The student will also conduct a comprehensive characterisation of the composites (microstructural features; mechanical and tribological behaviour).
The student will be joining a vibrant and fast-growing research group. The studentship is a part of the newly established Bournemouth University -Northeastern University centre for advanced materials research. Both institutes will jointly supervise the student, and the PhD work will be conducted at the advanced materials lab at Bournemouth University and the energy and environmental materials research centre in Northeastern University, China. The student will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment available, including a brand-new nanocomposites lab.
What does the funded studentship include?
Funded candidates will receive a maintenance grant of £15,921 per annum (unless otherwise specified), to cover their living expenses and have their fees waived for 36 months. In addition, research costs, including field work and conference attendance, will be met.
Funded Studentships are open to both UK/EU and International students unless otherwise specified.
