Project Title:

Sustainable lubricants for engines fuelled on hydrogen and hydrogen/ diesel mixtures

Project Description:

This project forms part of the School of Engineering’s work on sustainability.  It offers the successful applicant a unique opportunity to work with world experts and BP Castrol to investigate engineering aspects of the hydrogen economy.

Vehicle and engine manufacturers worldwide are investing heavily in the development of hydrogen engines for heavy trucks and off-road applications, where the internal combustion engine is seen as the only viable power plant for the foreseeable future. Lubricants will still be required and in 2020, 275,000 tonnes of fossil-fuel-derived engine lubricants were consumed in this country. Of this, 78% can be recycled saving around 300m tonnes of CO2 p.a.

The objectives of this project are to examine the life-cycle of lubricating oils in engines fuelled with hydrogen or diesel/hydrogen, and to develop a closed-loop, recycled supply of sustainable lubricant (ECO-lubricant). The project is strongly supported by BP as part of their net zero ambition and will integrate several industrial partners and external collaborators with interests in the development of the hydrogen economy.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with Castrol’s lubricant experts at Pangbourne and gain a unique insight into lubricants and their formulation.

2022 sees the establishment of an internally funded Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Central Lancashire, which will support fully funded PhD studentships on an annual basis and with the first cohort joining us in September 2022.

The Doctoral Training Centre will provide:

  • A bespoke cohort programme of training & development focused on research skills and professional development that aligns with impact agendas
  • An events programme to include external speakers, networking opportunities and careers support
  • Opportunities to undertake industrial placements
  • A dedicated support team – academic and administrative
  • Tuition fees paid, annual stipend and a fund to support research activities
