Project Title: Assessing wear and lubricant changes in diesel engines fuelled by diesel/ hydrogen mixtures

Project Description: This project forms part of the School of Engineering’s work on sustainability.  It offers the successful applicant a unique opportunity to work with world experts BP Castrol and North West companies to investigate the performance of diesel engines as part of the hydrogen economy.

Vehicle and engine manufacturers worldwide are investing heavily in the development of hydrogen engines for heavy trucks and off-road applications, where the internal combustion engine is seen as the only viable power plant for the foreseeable future.

Oil samples from vehicles running on diesel/ hydrogen fuel mixtures will be examined to study engine wear and changes in lubricant properties.  The aim is to establish if hydrogen fuelling causes any deterioration in the engine over the longer term.  The project is a collaboration between a city council, a major lubricants company, an international analytics organisation, a retrofitting company and Loughborough University

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with Castrol’s lubricant experts at Pangbourne and gain a unique insight into lubricants and their formulation.

Graduates who have had time away from Science and/or Technology and who would now like to start a career in research are encouraged to apply - a part-time appointment is possible (2.5 days/week)

It is expected the successful applicant will commence September 2022.
