About the role
Technology Solutions is looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join its development team and provide technical leadership in the production of public facing digital experiences.
The Lead Front-end Engineer will work primarily within one of the five Digital Product teams. The product teams are cross-functional – consisting of Developers, UX and Digital Designers, Product Managers and Content Authors – and the Lead Front-end Engineer will be expected to work closely within their own product team to deliver its objectives. This role will also have a broader focus, acting as one of a group of three Lead Engineers who maintain oversight of all the work carried out by the developers across the Digital Product teams and more widely across the museum. This group of Lead Engineers will drive the technical direction of the Development team, setting standards, choosing technologies and ensuring solutions across the product teams meet the needs of the business, as defined by the Product Leads.
The Lead Front-end Engineer should have demonstrable experience in leading development and delivery of public-facing websites or applications and a good understanding of designing and building for user needs. They will be able to demonstrate a strong track record in providing technical leadership, designing and co-ordinating technical solutions across multiple teams, and should be comfortable in line-managing or mentoring other developers within the team.
Significant extensive experience in building front end applications using JavaScript frameworks, specifically React/Next.js, is expected, as well as extensive exposure to working with RESTful APIs and GraphQL. They will have an excellent understanding of web performance, accessibility and web security best practices.
Strong front-end development skills will be expected in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Git, responsive design and using CSS pre-processors (e.g. Sass), as well as experience working in an agile/lean environment. This will be backed by a broad knowledge of web development platforms, technologies, languages and protocols and experience working with enterprise Content Management Systems, such as Adobe AEM.
Reporting to the Head of Systems Development and Operations.
About you
We are looking for someone with substantial experience developing public-facing websites or applications and a good understanding of designing and building for user needs.
We also require some prior experience taking senior or lead roles in software development projects or being the technical lead within a product team structure, taking responsibility for delivery across the team.
