Job description

We are seeking a technically skilled full stack developer to join the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences.

This role will primarily support the development of several custom web applications that we have created. The post holder will also help to develop new web applications.

You will be providing second/third line support to both staff and students to help with any issues on our web technologies.

This is a hybrid role with time split between working from home and on-site.

A non-exhaustive list of technologies that you will work with in this role:

  • Linux: Ubuntu, CentOS
  • Development: Python, Git, Puppet, MySQL, PHP/Laravel, JavaScript
  • Virtualisation and Cloud: VMware/HyperV, AWS
  • Containers: Docker
  • Monitoring, benchmarking and logs: Zabbix, ELK Stack, Grafana, Apache JMeter

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is a full-time post

Key responsibilities

  • To contribute to the development, maintenance and testing of the bespoke and open-source faculty web applications
  • To configure and maintain our web hosting environment (LAMP)
  • Applying the latest security updates and patches for our web hosting environment
  • Create and update user documentation for our bespoke systems
  • Create unit tests for the bespoke web applications
  • Installing and configuring open-source web applications
  • Resolving support tickets escalations
  • Ability to understand technical specification but also confident to challenge proposed solutions

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or engineering field
  • Demonstrable LAMP stack administration experience
  • Competence in OOP PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and MySQL
  • Modern web frameworks such as Laravel and Node.js
  • Experience with DevOps platforms such as Gitlab/Github
  • Experience using Linux command line utilities
  • Experience learning from open-source documentation sites, Linux man pages and built-in help commands
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of python development
  • Knowledge of website load and unit testing
  • Linux administration
  • Configuration management technologies such as Puppet/Ansible
  • Experience using monitoring tool such as Zabbix
  • Experience with pen testing web applications
