The Pirbright Institute

Pirbright is a world-leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of viral diseases of farm animals and viruses that spread from animals to humans. We study viruses that are endemic and exotic to the UK. Our strengths in virology and understanding host immune systems provide a platform to control current diseases and respond to emerging threats.

ICL

The Department of Infectious Disease is one of eight departments within the Faculty of Medicine, and provides a research environment where scientists work together to address the unmet needs for infectious disease control.

This honorary position will be linked to the Section of Virology. The successful candidate will be employed by the Pirbright Institute and will hold an honorary position at ICL. They will benefit from unique capabilities, resources, and expertise across both Pirbright and ICL.

The role

The PI role is available as either an early career stage Fellowship or Group Leader.

Fellow (Band E from £41,181)

  • up to 5 years’ salary funding

Group Leader (Band F from £49,697, Band G from £62,121)

  • permanent position
  • annual consumables budget
  • opportunity to access Institute strategic funding for postdoctoral researcher

Main duties

Responsible for Running a Research Group:

  • Provide leadership and a collaborative focus for a research group
  • Drive the production of science through the recruitment, management and development of team
  • Mentoring next generation of scientists
  • Maintaining health, safety and biosafety and quality assurance
  • Develop and lead a sustainable programme of research to deliver impact.

Personal specification

Applicants are expected to possess a clear direction on fundamental science on avian influenza and to have an excellent research and technical grounding with the ambition to advance the use of cutting-edge technologies.

Fellow

Essential

  • PhD in relevant field
  • Compelling, innovative, research proposal which will contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and understanding in a relevant field
  • An excellent track record of productivity, including lead author publications
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills and commitment to developing management/leadership skills
  • Experience of leading small grant applications or contribution to larger applications

Group Leader

Essential

  • Existing experience as a research leader
  • At least five lead or senior author publications and a demonstration of fundamental impact in the field
  • Strategic awareness of primary routes of funding in the UK
  • Management and leadership skills with successful track record
