At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy by identifying, managing and eradicating animal diseases.
To support the delivery of statutory diagnostic and surveillance requirements, outbreak responses and APHA research activities, we currently require an enthusiastic Virology High Containment Building Officer to hold overall responsibility for the management and operation of the high containment ACDP3/SAPO4 facilities. As the building officer you will have daily oversight of the work delivered with viral pathogens within the facility, and manage a small team. You will ensure the compliance of the facilities with relevant legislation, promote best practice and provide leadership and primary decision making in health and safety matters in the facilities.
With excellent communication skills, you will be expected to liaise with key stakeholders including staff in the Virology department, APHA Safety, Health and Wellbeing Dept. (SHaW), Facilities Management, and external contractors. You will be responsible for ensuring staff are trained and competent to work within the facility and able to deal with emergency procedures through conducting regular contingency drills. Using your health and safety experience, you will review safety documentation, participate in and conduct safety inspections and attend safety audits and inspections with internal and external assessors. You will also develop an awareness of an exciting cutting-edge programme of national and international science.
In return for your dedication, we will support your ongoing development through appropriate training, and you will also enjoy excellent Civil Service benefits.
