Academic and Regional Assessors: Chevening Reading Committee

We are seeking Academic and Regional Assessors to participate in the 2023/24 Chevening Reading Committees.

Do you want to be involved in the selection of the world’s future leaders?

If so, you could play a crucial part in selecting future Chevening Scholars and Fellows.

The Chevening Programme is the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. Offered in over 160 countries and territories, the programme grants awards to outstanding individuals with leadership potential and a commitment to creating positive change in their home countries/territories.

Reading Committees play a vital part in selecting Chevening Scholars and Fellows. They are independent expert panels comprising two members: Academic and Regional Assessors.

Academic Assessors: Have experience assessing academic applications across subject areas. In addition to reading/scoring applications according to Chevening’s assessment criteria, Academic Assessors will consider the applicant’s academic abilities against courses chosen and will produce a short report for each country/territory assessed. Previously, Academic Assessors have included employees from UK higher education institutions, recruitment agencies or scholarship schemes.

Regional Assessors: Have international experience across a range of countries and/or regions. In addition to reading/scoring applications according to Chevening’s assessment criteria, Regional Assessors will consider the applicant’s career aspirations in relation to country/territory context and will produce a short report for each country/territory assessed. Previously, Regional Assessors have included former UK diplomats, private sector representatives or higher education institution employees.

Each committee will assess applications from one or more countries/territories from a specific region. Each assessor will make an assessment on the quality of applicants against the Chevening selection criteria. Committee members are required to submit scores on an online system between 21 November 2022 - 2 January 2023. All committee members are required to complete assessment of 20 applications by 29 November 2022. Committee members must also submit a short report for each country/territory assessed by 9 January 2023.

Please note: There is a mandatory requirement that all assessors must be UK residents, living in the UK for the duration of the assessment period.

Reading committee members will receive an honorarium for their time and contributions. The total amount received will be dependent on number of applications assessed, based on approximately £1.50 per application. It is anticipated that each committee member will assess between 400-600 applications. In the unlikely event there are no applications for reviewing, you will be reimbursed £25.00 Additionally, assessors will be paid £25 for satisfactory completion of each country/territory report.

Compulsory training will be provided to committee members. This will be online training, which all assessors must complete before being allocated applications. The training will include briefings on the marking criteria and how to complete the assessments using the online system.

Previous Reading Committee Members will also be required to complete this training.

For more information, including eligibility and application process details, please see the job profile.
