We are looking for a team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who can work effectively with all stakeholders including colleagues and users of our services. We operate a service desk according to ITIL best practice and the role will include providing "Level 2" support on a shared rota basis to the service desk working alongside colleagues from Level 1 support. Experience with ITSM tools, especially ServiceNow, would be an advantage.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Performing routine system administration tasks including monitoring, tuning, hardware fault detection and resolution.
  • Providing Level 2 support on a shared rota basis to the local service desk.
  • Ensuring incident tickets are resolved or escalated within SLA targets.
  • Providing appropriate training to members of the Level 1 Support activity.
  • Timely delivery of project work to specification and within budget.
  • Automation, deployment and monitoring of services.
  • Creating and maintaining accurate documentation of procedures and configurations.
  • Delivering training to colleagues or customers [Band E].
  • Multi-disciplinary technical project management [Band E].
  • Designing and deploying new services via formal change management [Band E].

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Degree in a scientific or technical subject or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Practical experience of the UNIX / Linux operating system on multi-user systems.
  • Strong scripting skills, preferably in Bash.
  • Ability to diagnose system faults and analyse problems.
  • Strong ability to understand the perspective of our customers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

To attain Band E we are looking for someone to demonstrate additional expertise and experience in at least two of the following:

  • Infiniband and TCP/IP networking design and operation.
  • Virtualisation, Cloud and container technologies.
  • Design and operation of SAN storage and Parallel File Systems.
  • Configuring and managing HPC workload managers.
  • Developing automated tools and processes supportive of fault identification, diagnosis and resolution.
  • Technical project leadership or experience of supervising technical staff.
  • Design and implementation of a HPC or clustered architecture.
