About the team/job

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge-technologies for life science research. The Mechanical Workshop & Design Office is a service within the EMBL Core Facilities that supports EMBL research groups in the fields of mechanical design and production, covering a wide range of services for instrumentation development . It has extensive expertise in solving mechanical problems as well as developing, designing and manufacturing new equipment for special requirements.

EMBL is looking for a motivated mechanical technician or engineer to lead as the Head of Mechanical Workshop & Design Office a team of 4 mechanics and one mechanical designer. 

Your role

In this role, you will:

  • lead and develop the Mechanical Workshop & Design Office, ensuring top service quality
  • work closely with and directly consult EMBL scientists and be responsible for individual projects from start to finish including the testing and installation phase
  • work effectively with the electronics workshop and the scientific instruments maintenance team to provide overall solutions to EMBL scientists
  • work with different EMBL sites across Europe to build relationships and provide service to these other sites
  • provide technical and personal leadership as well as training and mentoring for junior precision mechanics in your teams and others
  • lead cross-departmental communication to deliver products and projects
  • manage the day-to-day business, including budgeting, invoicing and parts lists 

You have

The ideal candidate for the position should have:

  • Completed training as a master mechanic, technician or mechanical engineer with several years of proven professional experience in a scientific environment or industry
  • Hands-on experience developing new part designs with suppliers
  • Ability to lead a precision mechanics team
  • Good understanding of several materials, their properties and uses
  • Solid experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks and SolidCam preferred)
  • Ability to work under project related time constraints
  • Ability to effectively manage and oversee multiple projects at any given time
  • Experience in service provision and customer interactions
  • Excellent communication skills in English and German are essential 

You might also have

  • Previous experience gained in a similar international environment is advantageous

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed for up to 9 years in total, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.

Salary: Monthly salary starting from 4,000 - 4,800 EUR after tax + other paid benefits (Grade 6 or 7)
