The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is seeking Research Nurse (Midwife) to play an integral role in the Detecting Intra-uterine Group B Streptococcus (DIGS) study, an observational cohort study building on the work of the hugely successful POPS. Our previous data has demonstrated Group B Streptococcus (GBS) can colonize the placenta antenatally, and results in an increased risk of the neonate being admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. This study will focus on evaluating the clinical sequalae associated with the presence of GBS in the placenta antenatally and determining the mechanisms behind these findings.

You will join a multidisciplinary team participating high quality in research delivery. The University is keen to support your personal and professional development; so this is an excellent opportunity to learn, grow and gain experience in a research environment.

You will act as the patient facing contact for the study independently consenting the women for the study. You will be expected to be present in the operating theatre during the elective caesarean section, where you will insert the urinary catheter, take vaginal and rectal swabs and take umbilical cord and maternal blood samples.

Effectively performing this role requires a high level of professionalism, and for you to act as a source of expertise to other members of the study team.

All of our Research midwives have regular opportunities to attend study days and continuous learning is actively encouraged.

The position will be for 3 years in the first instance.

The post will be co-terminus with the Honorary Research Contract.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (enhanced with children and adults' barred lists). This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
