About the Role

Applications are invited for a Research technician to work in the laboratory of Dr. Diu Nguyen, in the Centre of Haemato-Oncology, Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London.

The role holder will provide technical support to the group including postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students driving our research on the role of Post-transcriptional Regulators in normal and malignant hematopoiesis to identify novel therapeutic targets in acute myeloid leukemia. Applicants should have an BSc in Biological Sciences or relevant fields and have a strong background in Cancer biology and RNA biology. Experience in molecular biology is essential.

Candidates should be self-motivated, a team-player and be able to work on their own initiative. The candidate will benefit from state-of-the-art research facilities and the intellectual environment and interactive culture of the Barts Cancer Institute.

Key responsibilities

  • To organise and maintain mouse lines, perform genetic crosses and genotyping.
  • To assist other lab members with in vivo (animal) and in vitro (cell culture) experiments.
  • To perform analytical flow cytometry and flow cytometric cell sorting from bone marrow and blood samples.
  • To perform DNA maxiprep, viral production, qPCR and immunoblot based analysis.
  • To communicate regularly with the postdoctoral fellow directly supervising the post holder and with the rest of the lab. Presentation of data at lab meeting is encouraged.
  • To help design associated experimental protocols.
  • To keep records of laboratory activities, training and for governance compliance e.g. related to animals and human tissue.
  • To obtain quotes and liaise with suppliers.
  • To order supplies and animals.

About You

Essential requirements

  • An BSc in Biology, Biomedical sciences or a closely related subject area
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures
  • An understanding of the working of laboratory equipment
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Experience with molecular biology and cell culture techniques.

Desirable skills

  • Experience with working with animal models, including mice.
  • Experience with tissue dissection and surgical procedures.

The post is based at the Charterhouse square campus in London. It is full time, 1 year fixed term appointment, with possible extension and expected start date of early December 2022. The starting salary will be grade 3, £29,028 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
