The role

The School of Chemistry is seeking to appoint a 2-year full-time Research Technician to provide support for all aspects of organic geochemical analyses to join the team of Dr Charlotte Lloyd at the Organic Geochemistry Unit, University of Bristol. The postholder will specifically be supporting the analytical work associated with a NERC-GCRF funded project entitled, “Do Agricultural Microplastics Undermine Food Security And Sustainable Development In Developing Countries?”. 

What will you be doing?

The postholder will provide laboratory support for the project. Tasks will include preparation of samples for analysis (solvent extraction, derivatisation), operation of analytical instrumentation (GC, GC-MS, HRMS, py-GC/MS, LC-MS, and GC-C-IRMS), safe handling of chemicals, safe storage and waste disposal.

The postholder will also support the fieldwork components of the project in Bristol. Tasks will include setting up field experiments, sampling of soil, water and plants and maintenance of field plots/kit.

The technical support is essential in achieving the goals of the project. 

You should apply if

Essential criteria include:

  • Relevant qualifications at GCSE, or NVQ level 2/3, or equivalent level, plus relevant work experience; or significant relevant work experience; or relevant BSc and MSc.
  • Experience of working in a dynamic laboratory
  • A basic understanding of organic chemistry and/or environmental chemistry
  • Ability to complete given tasks with minimum supervision and to multitask with a range of laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practice and safety.
