Supported and mentored by the Group Head of Tax this role will be responsible for owning and managing all aspect of the University’s direct tax affairs, both in the UK and internationally.

Role

Working for the University of Warwick within their highly reputable Tax team. we are looking for a hardworking and pro-active individual for this pivotal role within the University’s Finance Office. Supported and mentored by the Group Head of Tax this role will be responsible for owning and managing all aspect of the University’s direct tax affairs, both in the UK and internationally.

Experience

A Chartered accountant with extensive relevant experience or proven track record of relevant work experience OR a Professional tax qualification, CTA or AIIT or work experience demonstrated to an equivalent level

Evidence of an ongoing commitment to professional development particularly keeping up to date with new case law and annual changes to tax legislation

Substantial Tax experience across all direct taxes involving complex organisations with exposure to international business and global mobility

Experience of analysing complex information from a variety of sources within tight deadlines and identifying the key strategic and operational issues.

Well-developed understanding of tax regulations and legislation

In depth and up to date knowledge and significant tax experience

Excellent written and oral communication skills and a strong team player

An ability to assimilate and interpret complex financial reports and legislation

Ability to communicate technical matters in a non-technical way both orally and in writing

Ability to plan and reformulate transactions to achieve tax efficiency

Ability to negotiate and coherently present the University’s case in discussions and correspondence with HMRC

Good stakeholder management – able to foster effective relationships across a range of internal stakeholders at varying levels of seniority

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

Ability to motivate others

Change Management – ability to identify opportunities for process development and improvement with ability to plan, implement and deliver changes to realise benefits

Duties

  1. Monitor the University’s Internationalisation Programme to identify and proactively put in processes to manage overseas compliance. Identity and document risks in relation to exposure to overseas tax liabilities and advise on lawful mitigation of risks. Ensure risks are quantified and fed back into departments/projects so that they can be factored into cost/benefit analysis.
  2. Provide support and guidance to HR and the International Working Group in respect of employee and university tax obligations arising from global mobility activity. Feed into policies and procedures adopted for the management of global mobility across the university.
  3. Accurate and timely preparation and on-line submission to HMRC or overseas authorities of statutory corporation tax self- assessment returns for the University and all its subsidiary companies in accordance with local legal requirements.
  4. Act, together with the Group Head of Tax as an expert in assessing IR35 cases as requested by departments and undertake second reviews of cases as required under the dispute resolution process. Manage regular internal audit of process and cases.
  5. Assist the Group Head of Tax in identifying and evaluating lawful opportunities for minimising the tax liabilities of the University and development and implementation of tax planning in collaboration with external advisors in line with University’s published tax strategy.
  6. Preparation of Tax Reporting for inclusion in UK Statutory accounts. Calculation and advising on Deed of Covenant payments from subsidiaries.
  7. Assistance with the development and preparation of transfer pricing documentation as required to meet local requirements in all territories in which the University carries out its business.
  8. Assist on PAYE matters on technical issues working with Human Resources and Payroll to ensure UK income tax and social security is properly accounted and carry out a review of P11D’s and PSA returns prepared by Payroll team.
  9. Provide on-going support and guidance to departments to assess the tax implications of projects and matters as they arise, including the preparation, updating and maintenance of written guidance on the Finance Office Pages and feeding into other processes (e.g. Internal Financial regulations as required).
  10. Extract and provide data for the University’s Partial Exemption Special Method (PESM) annual adjustment for VAT
