PHG Foundation

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £90,000 to £120,000 + benefits
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 22nd November 2022
Closes: 3rd January 2023

The PHG Foundation is a linked exempt charity of the University of Cambridge. It is an independent legal entity governed by its own Board of Trustees. Over the last 25 years PHG has established itself as a highly respected health policy unit with an impressive record of leading and supporting policy development. Its mission to make science work for health is centred around the translation of science into policy and practice.

The role of Director is an exciting opportunity for a world class individual who has worked at the interface of policy and academia and understands the nature of genomic science and technologies and their application. Applicants will have a track record in policy as it relates to genomics and the biomedical sciences and their ethical, legal and social implications. Special consideration will be given to applicants with the ability to enhance the position of the PHG Foundation internationally.

The new Director will have the leadership skills and vision to head the PHG Foundation and to make strategic relationships with institutions across the UK and globally; and a breadth of understanding that spans genomic and molecular sciences, its legal ethical and social implications, and the public health sciences such as information, management and epidemiology. He or she will have insights into scientific research and its interface with clinical and public health practice; and must feel comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment and have the ability to synthesise knowledge across this set of diverse disciplines for the development of public policy. The successful applicant will be expected to take the organisation to new heights, to further its reputation, and to give it greater prominence in the genomics policy space.

Applicants will have an advanced academic or professional degree, or equivalent (PhD, MB, MD, JD, LLB) in a relevant domain or discipline of the PHGF’s interests: in philosophy, law, public health, clinical medicine or a relevant science. Opportunities will exist for the successful applicant to be appointed to an Affiliated Academic Title in the School of Clinical Medicine in discussion with the Regius Professor of Physic. He or she will also be awarded either a Fellowship or Senior Membership of Hughes Hall, the one or other at the discretion of the College through its Fellowships Committee.

The PHG Foundation is situated at the Strangeways Research Laboratory, a 10 minute walk from the Cambridge Biomedical Campus where Addenbrookes and the Royal Papworth Hospitals are sited with the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the headquarters of Astra Zeneca.

The salary for this post will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the successful candidate and will be in the region of £90,000 to £120,000.  There is an excellent benefits package, including generous pension provision.

Details of this role are available below.

Dr Ron Zimmern ron.zimmern@phgfoundation.org, Chair of the PHG Foundation Trustee Board, will be pleased to speak informally to interested individuals. Please include a letter of application, a statement of your vision for the PHG Foundation and how you will seek to develop it, a curriculum vitae, a publications list and details of three referees.
