We are seeking a Hydrologist to join a research team which manages and analyses hydrological UK data, working on various high-profile projects including the UK National River Flow Archive https://nrfa.ceh.ac.uk/, National Hydrological Monitoring Programme and Hydrological Outlooks.

The post will also support a wide range of other projects. Current projects include the appraisal and strategic application of hydrometric networks, for example, for climate change analysis or flood hydrology purposes, and the characterisation of flow intermittence along non-perennial rivers.

As a Research Associate at UKCEH, you’ll be supported with a three-year training plan at the start of your career.  As well as on-the-job training and self-guided learning, you’ll have access to traditional learning, such as online and in-person courses. Training allocations are up to 15% in year one and two, and up to 10% in year three.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the acquisition, quality control and dissemination processes for the UK National River Flow Archive, the UK's focal point for hydrometric data
  • Process and undertake quality control of incoming river flow submissions from the UK hydrometric Measuring Authorities at the national scale, while also taking on a "regional representative" role within the NRFA, overseeing the data and metadata stewardship for gauging stations for a region of the UK
  • Contribute to the activities of the National Hydrological Monitoring Programme - producing monthly Hydrological Summaries and Outlooks for the UK, analysis of extreme events, trend analysis of hydro meteorological data - and its wide range of outputs (reports, blog posts, briefings, peer-reviewed papers)
  • Support hydrometric network appraisal projects, collating and pre-processing metadata, assisting with stakeholder engagement activities and providing administrative support to the project manager
  • Support research projects into the spatiotemporal dynamics of non-perennial rivers, collating and comparing observations of their hydrological behaviour
  • Promote social media outreach across the activities of the Hydrological Status and Outlooks Group
