About us
The UCL Institute of Finance and Technology (IFT) is the new UCL Institute dedicated to finance. The IFT is committed to becoming a hub for the highest level of excellence in research, and for its creative and innovative approach to the education of financial students, and will provide leadership and training for future financial and business leaders by enabling close collaboration between cutting-edge applied research, financial innovation, industry and government. Innovative forms of finance are being developed and tested due to new technologies coming into operation and in response to future expectations.
The IFT is built around a vision of finance at the service of major societal challenges. New financial models, embedding technical, environmental and social aspects within financial mechanisms, have been developed within the Institute by experts in their fields who pass on this new understanding to combine applied research, innovative finance, and entrepreneurial creativity in a dynamic learning environment.
The IFT runs two MSc programmes: the MSc Banking and Digital Finance, launched in 2019, and the MSc Venture Capital and Private Equity with Financial Technology, launched in 2021. The dissertation module is shared between the two programmes. The primary objectives of the programmes are to provide students with the tools and skills to understand the underlying concepts and practical trade-offs entailed in technology-led finance, investment and policy. The programmes emphasise the analytical foundations of finance and financial products and FinTech, focusing on theory and methods and making extensive use of relevant practical applications. The syllabi are structured around the development of a global view of responsible finance tailored to students’ career aspirations in business, financial institutions, government and NGOs.
