Job description

The Business School seeks to recruit a Senior Lecturer, in the post of Senior Advisor, to the Qatar Centre in Global Banking and Finance (QCGBF). The new appointee will be expected to add significantly to the Banking and Finance Subject Group’s research and strategic capacity. Additionally, while the role is primarily research- and management-based, the post holder will provide teaching capacity for the educational activities of the Centre. This is a permanent appointment. At present, the Centre has confirmed funding until August 2024. If the funding does not resume after this date the appointment will continue as a standard Senior Lecturer position, within the Banking and Finance Group.

The Business School is looking for a distinguished scholar who already has an outstanding international profile in the fields of economics and/or finance research. Expertise in the fields of financial regulation and/or central bank policy making are essential. Further, the post holder will ideally have considerable working experience in a central bank. The post holder is expected to demonstrate exceptional ambition and leadership in developing the activities of the new Centre, in particular in helping launch successfully the new MSc in Financial Policy and Regulation.

The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the Business School’s research capacity and will require a publication list that includes peer-reviewed articles published in leading relevant journals.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • To undertake high-quality research and publish in highly-rated internationally recognised journals.
  • To participate in internationally recognised academic networks and conferences.
  • To take a role in the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Sustain a high-quality portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and to secure the funding required for this research as required.
  • Advise on, help with and promote the research and teaching activities of the QCGBF.
  • Supervise postgraduate research students and/or research staff.
  • Take responsibility for the planning, organisation and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the School.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Centre Director, Head of Group or administration requested by the Executive Dean.

Essential criteria

  • PhD in relevant subject area
  • Appropriate list of relevant publications
  • Evidence of world-class research capacity
  • Significant experience of developing research projects and collaborative funding bids
  • Evidence of good presentation skills
  • Significant experience of carrying out academic administration
  • Significant experience of being innovative in teaching and curriculum design
  • Engagement in professional organisations (conference papers, workshops, memberships)
  • Some experience of being a team player
  • Desire to promote the subject at all levels
  • Willingness to contribute to the pastoral care of students
  • Significant central banking experience

Desirable criteria

  • Some experience of innovation in teaching and curriculum design
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues across the Faculty and university
