The Structural Integrity and Non-Destructive Evaluation research group is a part of the Manufacturing and Materials Centre in the Research Institute for Clean Growth and Future Mobility. Our research focuses on safety-critical applications and the fundamental scientific knowledge required to assure and improve safety. We work on novel design concepts, characterization of materials properties, development of novel analytical and processing techniques and fundamental mechanistic understanding for improvement in product lifetime, primarily for the aerospace and nuclear sectors. By understanding in-service material behaviour, we support our industrial partners in producing superior and more cost-effective products with longer lifespans.

This role will support the delivery of two projects funded by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI).

You should have a PhD in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. You will be able to contribute to current and future research in structural integrity, as well as broader research in material engineering through the application of fatigue and fracture mechanics analysis and associated modelling of materials behaviour.

You will have a track record of high-quality publications in the field of structural integrity, in particular, fatigue and fracture behaviour of metallic materials, material characterisation methods, numerical modelling using the finite element method. You should understand the durability and damage tolerance of aerospace materials and structures. You are also expected to develop funding applications and perform consultancy work that we have in the group.

Desirable skills/experiences: having relevant post-doctoral experience in Materials Engineering or Structural Integrity, in laser shock peening and/or cold spray technologies; previous experience of PhD supervision, as well as evidence that you are able to secure external funding to support your research.
