Translational Research in Precision Breast Surgery

We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow, who will be involved in a major research project in the theme of technological innovation for precision breast surgery directed by Mr Daniel Leff, while working towards a PhD degree. The research project will entail project design, experimental work in addition to data analysis and reporting the results in peer-reviewed journals. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with an interest in research and they would be expected to register for a higher degree (PhD). You must be able to demonstrate some previous experience in research and must show evidence of ability to develop personal research projects.

Department of Surgery and Breast Unit

In 2022, Imperial College ranked number 7th globally in the QS World University Rankings and number 1st  overall in the UK Research Excellence Framework. It currently has the highest research impact of all Russel Group Universities. Imperial College NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in England. In 2019-2020 it had a turnover of £1.3bn and treated 1.3M people. The Breast Unit which is located at Charing Cross Hospital is one of the busiest and most research active in the UK. It is served by 5 consultants covering specialist oncoplastic breast surgery including therapeutic mammoplasty, partial breast reconstruction (AICAP / LICAP) and implant based breast reconstruction. The unit hosts a National Training Interface Fellowship. Microsurgical reconstruction is offered in collaboration with the Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons, and a dedicated Oncoplastic MDT for the North-West London.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide a commitment to Imperial College London over a period to perform research leading to a PhD.
• Plan and carry out research in accordance with the project aims
• Generate and display the results and interpret their implications
• Write results for publication and dissemination via presentations and peer-reviewed journals
• Present research findings to colleagues and at conferences
• Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings

Essential Requirements

The post holders will be required to fulfil clinical commitments within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. This will include 2 breast clinics per week and participation in the acute on-call rota.

• Degree in Medicine or equivalent
• Full GMC registration with licence to practice
• MRCS or equivalent
• Intermediate Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support training
• ST5+ level in General Surgery with evidence of specialist interest in Breast Surgery
• Proven track record and evidence of running one stop / rapid Diagnostic Breast clinics
• Proven experience in the acute hospital setting
• Sound knowledge and experience in the management of critically ill patients

This is a full-time and fixed term role for 3 years. You will be based at the Charing Cross Hospital Campus.
