Applications are invited for a 3 year Research Associate position in the department of Mathematics at the University of York to work under the supervision of Dr. Geranios on the Royal Society research grant “An important conjecture in the representation theory of the symmetric groups”.
The aim of the project is to answer some fundamental questions in the modular representation theory of the general linear groups and symmetric groups. We wish to gain insight into the structure of the induced modules and Specht modules respectively, obtain new results on the decomposition number problem and compute certain extension groups between irreducible representations for these groups. We also aim to express our results in the wider context of the quantum general linear groups and Hecke algebras.
Candidates will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant area of Mathematics. An ideal candidate will have a background in representation theory of algebraic groups, symmetric groups, Schur algebras and Hecke algebras. The applicant should also show great potential at mastering new areas and techniques.
