The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) is seeking a highly qualified Assistant Professor in Transregional Studies. Strategically positioned between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea - the gateways to the Middle East, South Asia, and China - Southeast Asia has in the past and present, remained an important centre of transregional exchanges (Muslim, Indian, Chinese, and European). Transregional studies allow us to better understand that connections are the constructed products of historical processes by concrete actors at specific times with their own goals and intentions. Such studies traverse maritime and/or territorial connections (including borderland communities). The IAS invites scholars who have interests and a track record in transregional research in Southeast Asia to apply for this position. It is desirable that candidates are willing to develop research interests on Borneo and issues of regional integration related to Southeast Asia.

As a research institute, we are interested in candidates with current research productivity in top ranked academic journals, who are experienced in international collaboration and funding submissions.

The successful applicant is expected to teach social science modules in a trans-disciplinary way in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) or related modules in other faculties in UBD. Active participation in the institute’s core functions including research, seminars and administration is also a requirement.

Academic and Professional Qualifications required:

All applicants must have a Ph.D. from a recognized university, and a demonstrated record of publication in top-indexed academic journals and renowned publishers combined with relevant teaching experience.
