The Post

This is a senior post delivering Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) skills for academic and other colleagues within the Faculty and so helping ensure compliance with the highest standards of animal welfare and that the requirements of Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 are met.

The NVS will work with the Establishment License Holder, Project License Holders, Personal License Holders, other named roles (under the terms of the Establishment License) and Animal Care Technicians to ensure excellent fish welfare and ethical standards are maintained and are kept up-to-date with best practice.  They should also ensure the highest health and safety standards are maintained at all times.

The NVS will advise academics and other relevant staff on the optimal implementation on the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement) in relation to fish and so minimise harm to these animals.

Description of Duties

  • Act as an internal and external consultant, advising on the development and application of specialist techniques and/or procedures and the analysis and interpretation of result
  • Assess applications for ethical approval to work with fish and other animals and advise on their suitability for approval and on how they might be improved in line with the 3Rs
  • Develop, implement and maintain veterinary health and welfare plans for all animal facilities
  • Maintain a regular dialogue with the Establishment License Holder to ensure they are familiar with all issues and developments relating to animal welfare and are aware of any potential current of future risks relating to fish welfare
  • Provide veterinary advice and treatment, where needed and when requested by a personal license holder
  • Administer relevant methods of humane killing listed in ASPA Schedule 1 when required to do so
  • Advise on the husbandry, housing and welfare needs of fish, including the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease; and the impact of housing and husbandry systems on the welfare and needs of fish

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

  • Relevant university degree or equivalent
  • Be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) with expertise in fish

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of relevant technical/scientific work demonstrating development through involvement in progressively more demanding work/roles
  • Be familiar with the main provisions of ASPA
  • Have established a programme of veterinary care and health monitoring
  • Have actively been involved, on a day-to-day basis, in safeguarding the welfare of the protected fish at the establishment
