Head of Learning & Teaching

Job summary

Define the direction of academic innovation and good practice in learning and teaching. Chair learning and teaching committees and events, providing expertise and good practice which supports and develops academics across the School. Learning development leadership of academic staff, and engagement work with students. Devise workable strategies to enable academics in their professional development, and ensure resources are managed effectively. Identify institutional responses, to enhance teaching methods in response to School strategy and the five-year plan. Lead activities which disseminate good practice, both internally and externally. Ensure that IML Programme Leaders are enriching the creative, technical and soft skills needed for students to pursue a successful career in the Fashion and Design industries.

Key purpose of the role

1. Pedagogy- Engage with academics across the School to identify, understand and enable priorities for learning and teaching which secure enhanced currency, student experience and graduate employability. Oversee the increasing professionalisation and pedagogical research of the faculty of the School, to enable a continuing leading-edge approach to the delivery of international higher education.
2. Learning & Development- Pro-actively champion excellence in learning, teaching, assessment, curriculum design, in partnership with colleagues across the University, and support the development of academic staff, identifying opportunities for change and continual development.
3. Strategic Vision- Establish and lead the development and implementation of relevant Learning and Teaching strategies and strategic approaches to sustaining and improving learning and teaching, enhancing subject cultures and identities, and is evidence-based and benchmarked against the sector. Develop personal research in the Fashion and Design subject area and work with Programme Leaders to ensure continuous creativity in the formation of IML Fashion and Design programmes. Problem solve solutions with academic and professional staff, writing and presenting appropriate L&T and institutional papers and reports.
4. Research and Scholarship – Actively advancing knowledge in the sector of expertise through participation to conferences, exhibitions, the development of research, projects and teams and publications. Ensuring professional currency and development is maintained at all times. Keep abreast of national and relevant international Higher Education policy developments and good practice in order to inform developments at the London School, responding to consultations and calls for evidence and liaise with external agencies as appropriate.
5. People Leadership and Management - Manage own resources, their professional growth and skills development; plan and organise jobs and activities and assign new projects; actively participate in the selection process; guarantee respect of policy, code of ethics and company procedures; actively support initiatives in Succession Planning, Change Management and innovation; ensure that all learning and teaching documentation is produced correctly and constantly updated.

Skills and Education

• Educated at a postgraduate degree level;
• Experience in the Fashion industry as a designer is must;
• Advance HE/ HEA Senior Fellowship qualification is desirable;
• Proven success in a similar role is essential;
• Experience in academic staff development in a UK HE setting;
• Knowledge of UK HE learning, teaching, assessment and employability practices;
• Experience in academic mentoring and leadership;
• Experience in planning, monitoring and outcomes management;
• Experience in stakeholder engagement;
• Experience of pedagogical research dissemination events/ publication;
• Experience in data analysis is an advantage;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Excellent knowledge of English, written and spoken;
• Knowledge of Italian is advantageous.
