PhD Studentship: Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Rotaxane-based Ligands.

University of Birmingham - School of Chemistry

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Birmingham
Funding for: UK Students
Funding amount: The project is funded by the School of Chemistry and it is open to UK students.
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 6th February 2024
Closes: 6th May 2024

The PhD project will focus on the preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) using rotaxane-based ligands. In particular, the project will demonstrate how rotaxane motion affects the adsorption of guest molecules in MOFs. This is an exciting new direction of research which builds upon expertise in the Champness research group in both MOFs and mechanically-interlocked molecules, including rotaxanes.

Candidates should be motivated to employ supramolecular chemistry for important applications and be interested in working across traditional chemical disciplines. The project will involve both organic and inorganic synthesis accompanied by a range of analytical techniques including NMR, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be trained and to use the groups own single crystal X-ray diffractometer and will study in the new Molecular Sciences Building at the University of Birmingham.

The candidate will be supervised and supported by Professor Neil Champness at the University of Birmingham and be a member of his research group in the School of Chemistry (neilchampnessgroup.com). Applicants should have obtained a strong Master's degree in Chemistry. The project is open to UK students. To apply please contact Neil using the details below. There is no closing date but please apply as soon as possible since the position will be filled as soon as the right candidate is found.

The School of Chemistry is keen to achieve a gender and diversity balance across the School and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. The School holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award, which recognises its work in promoting women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine in higher education.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Neil R. Champness, Email: n.champness@bham.ac.uk.
