MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU):

The MRC PPU is one of the world’s most renowned centres for research on protein phosphorylation and ubiquitylation (http://www.ppu.mrc.ac.uk/). Many world-leading researchers in the field of signal transduction have trained within the MRC PPU. The major aims of the MRC PPU are to advance understanding of the role of protein phosphorylation and ubiquitylation in cell regulation and human disease, to facilitate the development of drugs to treat diseases caused by abnormalities in phosphorylation, to ge nerate reagents and improve technologies. A key remit of the MRC PPU is to train the next generation of scientists who will advance our understanding in this crucial area of medical research.

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Senior Laboratory Support Technician within our Unit, to help deliver high-quality laboratory management and operational support to academic research staff. This is a full-time/Permanent appointment.

The post-holder will assist the MRC PPU Laboratory Manager in the support of a multi-disciplinary group of academic research staff working in a busy life science research environment. The post holder will also assist in running a containment level 2 tissue culture facility which provides specialised support to MRC PPU researchers. They will direct the day-to-day tasks of the laboratory support technicians and provide cover for basic tasks in the absence of the Laboratory Manager

This position will suit someone accustomed to providing client-facing services with a hands-on approach in a busy multi-faceted support system. With a focus on continuous improvement, the candidate with thrive on autonomy and be encouraged to think creatively when identifying solutions to new or existing problems. As an integral part of the MRC PPU they will facilitate the research output of a team of world-class researchers fighting human disease.

Your priorities will include:

  • Proactively contributing to planning of laboratory management activities for delivery of unit objectives.
  • Assisting in the provision of an enhanced tissue culture service for MRC PPU researchers
  • Delegated responsibility for procurement of consumables and scientific equipment
  • Coordinating the maintenance, repair and servicing of scientific equipment.
  • Day to day supervision of junior members of the Laboratory Management Team, planning their workload, acting as their first point of contact with responsibility for their ongoing training.

  • A motivated and proactive individual able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, effective communicator to a varied audience (e.g. students, PIs, contractors)
  • Excellent time management and ability to manage competing priorities in a busy work environment.
  • Excellent IT skills - University ordering systems; Database systems; Microsoft office
  • Experienced in culturing of mammalian cells (aseptic technique) and associated tasks
