Background

This exciting role is based in the Human Anatomy Unit (HAU) within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. The HAU currently comprises facilities for teaching, including embalming, prosection and dissection, plus our Human Tissue Act (HTA) licensed small group teaching rooms within the Medical School. The HAU works with the Professor of Anatomy to maintain and enhance the student experience across all the College Programmes that require specialist anatomical education.

The post holder will form an important part of the dedicated Professional Services team supporting the HAU, as they will often be the face of anatomy to our anatomy donors, our donors’ relatives and all visitors, staff and students entering the Unit.

Role Summary

You will deliver timely and high-quality administrative support in the HAU, utilising your high-level communication skills to support both the Anatomy Administrator and the whole HAU academic and professional services team. You will act as the first point of contact in both the HAU Office and for incoming telephone calls. These calls may involve talking to potential donors who would like to bequeath their bodies to the University of Birmingham and also to their relatives once the donor has passed away. Visitors to HAU may be staff of the Unit or wider university, students on our courses or external visitors, so a professional demeanour is required. You will also offer a wide range of administrative support to the HAU team.

Person Specification

You will need to evidence:

  • Some professional experience in similar roles; and
  • GCSEs to a minimum of grade C/4 in English and Mathematics (or equivalent qualifications).

You will be:

  • Comfortable acting as the first point of contact for the Human Anatomy Unit to internal and external customers in person, on the telephone and virtually.
  • Comfortable in a role where you take responsibility for specific tasks, where you can carry out duties without needing to refer to others, and where you have some scope for choice and using your own judgement.
  • Comfortable with working largely on your own initiative, although supervision is available.
  • Encouraged to contribute to improving processes and to propose new ways of working.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with others, and resolve straightforward duties where appropriate.
  • Comfortable working under tight deadlines.
  • Well organised, with the ability to prioritise work proactively, independently and as part of a team.
  • Expected to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable operating in a regulated environment and contribute to the statutory record-keeping required by the Human Tissue Act (2004).
