Role Summary

Applications are now invited for the post of Student Support Manager – Student Experience. This is an exciting opportunity to join the College of Arts and Law’s Student Support Team, taking on operational management responsibility for a team of Student Experience Officers delivering high-quality events, opportunities and academic adjacent activities to enhance the experience of c. 7000 students across a range of UG and PG learning programmes. The post-holder will lead and manage a dynamic team of seven staff who lead on student voice and representation, community building, welcome, reinduction and transition. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Student Support Manager – Wellbeing and the Academic Writing Advisory Service Manager, who collectively comprise the College Student Support Operations Group.  

The role involves:

  • Providing leadership for a group of five SEOs and in collaboration with the Head of Options Student Academic Experience interns. This includes conducting 1:1s, PDRs, team meetings and overseeing training and development of the team. 
  • Taking responsibility for the consistent and effective development of the student experience in CAL, in conjunction with the Head of Operations and multiple stakeholders across the University.
  • As a key part of the Student Support Leadership team, work in partnership with the Student Support Managers for Student Wellbeing and AWAS to formulate a holistic package of academic adjacent activities
  • Acting as deputy for the Head of Operations – Student Support, as appropriate. This might include writing and presenting reports to relevant College and University committees.
  • Analysing and evaluating the success of activity, maintaining dialogues with academic colleagues and central services and in turn making recommendations for improvement and innovation.
  • Leading on the management of induction/welcome for the College and overseeing the development of associated College online resources and activities. This includes, but is not limited to the Education Support Gateway (inclusive of Transition Support Units) and the Summer Gateway and targeted resources for WP students in particular. 
  • Acting at need as a deputy to the College’s Safeguarding contact for under-18s. 

Person Specification

  • A first degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Recent experience of working in the HE environment and a thorough understanding of the undergraduate and postgraduate education and the student lifecycle within the arts and humanities area.
  • Demonstrable understanding barriers to participation and engagement, including challenge faced by WP and various other student demographics.
  • Demonstrable capability to lead and manage a HE service area including excellent administration skills and the ability to manage multiple and competing admin tasks.
  • Proven ability to contribute to the formation of strategy in a related area and translating strategy into action.
