Director of Learning Innovation

Job Summary 

The Director of Learning Innovation role sits within in the IDEA Lab at Imperial College Business School. The purpose of the role is to spearhead technological innovation and experimentation to deliver on the Lab's mission to revolutionise digital education. 

You will devise and deliver pilot projects to evaluate the benefits of emerging technologies for higher education, Executive Education, and lifelong learning. These projects will range from short-term tactical experiments and trials to longer term research projects, and will help to define the future of education. 

In this role, you will be responsible for the rapid adoption, implementation and evaluation of cutting-edge technologies that enhance or transform the teaching and learning experience at Imperial, including artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive extended reality experiences (VR, AR, XR).  

You will directly manage two small teams: i) Tools and Technology, who are responsible for the testing, deployment and management of software and hardware for teaching and learning; and ii) Data and Evaluation, who are responsible for learning analytics, data engineering, educational research, and the evaluation of pilot projects. You will also collaborate with Learning Designers and Media Producers in the wider IDEA Lab. 

Working closely with the Director of Digital Education, you will ensure outcomes from innovation pilots shape the Business School’s highly successful digital education programmes. The role will require you to collaborate with other Ed Tech, innovation, and enterprise teams across the university, including the Digital Media Lab. 

Externally, you will act as an ambassador for the School, cultivating relationships that enhance our visibility and strategic goals in the digital education realm. You will be an active participant in educational research, an ambassador for the School's digital education initiatives, and a representative at national and international conferences.

This role invites an entrepreneurial thinker and expert collaborator with a deep passion for ground-breaking technology. You will bring a track record of devising and delivering innovative projects and will use your ability to inspire others to bring creative ideas to life.

Duties and responsibilities

Thought leadership and strategic vision

  • Instigate research initiatives and pilot projects that position the IDEA Lab at the forefront of the latest advances in digital tools and technology enhanced learning.
  • Cultivate thought leadership within the Business School and in the wider field of digital education.
  • Work in collaboration with the Head of Educational Research and Evaluation to evaluate technology pilots and ensure a systematic approach to measuring their impact on educational outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Digital Education to ensure the seamless integration of new digital tools and novel approaches into existing online programmes.
  • Attend and represent the IDEA Lab at national and international education conferences, enhancing visibility and fostering innovative partnerships.
  • Liaise with the Executive Director of the IDEA Lab to define and lead the strategic vision for the IDEA Lab, aligning with the overarching mission and goals of Imperial College Business School.
  • Act as an internal subject matter expert for AI, XR and data science, consistently advising and facilitating professional development opportunities for others at Imperial to understand the opportunity for new technologies to enhance digital learning and foster innovative practice.

Operations and resource management

  • Oversee the day-to-day work of Learning Technologists and other e-Learning specialists in the IDEA Lab, ensuring smooth delivery of all pilot projects.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director, IDEA Lab, to manage and forecast budgets and resource requirements.
  • Regularly review and adjust operations and resources to align with strategic goals, ensuring a culture of constant enhancement and excellence in the Lab's outputs.
  • Act as a key stakeholder and decision maker in the selection and procurement of new software and hardware, ensuring return on investment.

External relations and partnerships

  • Act as an ambassador for the School at external events and conferences.
  • Cultivate productive and profitable relationships with industry partners and vendors.
  • Forge a reliable network of external suppliers to ensure frictionless collaboration, rapid development and value for money.
  • Liaise across Imperial and with external entities as required to advocate for the IDEA Lab's initiatives and to promote the School's thought leadership in redefining education. 

Essential requirements 

  • A degree and postgraduate qualification, or equivalent, in Technology Enhanced Learning, Computer Science, Information systems or other related discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience in acting as an agent of innovation within a comparable environment.
  • Experience in successfully leading the operations of a small team in a relevant area.
  • Practical experience of using industry-leading software and hardware to create 3D, virtual and/or augmented environments or learning experiences.
  • Broad knowledge of computer systems and programming languages required to gather, manipulate, and analyse data for research purposes.
  • Expert knowledge of Artificial Intelligence including the workings of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs).
  • Strong understanding of the metaverse ecosystem including leading manufacturers and content developers.
  • Communication - the ability to get one’s message understood clearly by adopting a range of communication styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.
  • Leadership - able to inspire others by communicating a vision with passion and clarity, articulating a compelling case for change, providing momentum when driving change, involves others in building plans for change.
  • Strategic thinking – able to identify a vision along with the plans which need to be implemented to meet the end goal, evaluating situations, decisions and issues in the short, medium and long term.
  • Influencing and persuading - able to present sound and well-reasoned arguments to convince others.
  • Analytical Thinking – able to simplify complex problems, processes or projects into component parts, explore and evaluate them systematically. Is able to understand commercial imperatives and trading relationships.
  • Managing relationships - able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
