The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Senior Civil Engineering Technician to provide technical support and expertise to the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (CEDA). This role facilitates the smooth running of teaching and research requirements within the Civil and Environmental Engineering stream and associated laboratories.
The role requires providing technical support for the CEDA teaching program and assisting with the set up and delivery of teaching sessions within the School.
This role will join an established technical team within a busy department, and you will need to be flexible and organised to manage a varied workload.
We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis, even where a position is advertised as full-time, unless there are operational or other objective reasons why it is not possible to do so.
We are looking for someone with (or working towards completion within the next 6 month) of a HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent who can provide expert advice and guidance to senior colleagues.
You will be able to design and construct test rigs as required, using the overhead crane following relevant safe systems of work and perform materials testing and demonstrate materials testing equipment to students and others. You will also embark on training of team members in new technologies as they arise, and enlarge personal skill sets to reflect the civil and mechanical technical needs of the School.
This is a very busy environment and you will need to have strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to forward plan, prioritise and make appropriate decisions. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate that they can deliver work to strict deadlines whilst working under pressure.
You will need to evidence excellent interpersonal skills with relevant experience of working independently and as part of a team. This role provides day-to-day supervision of apprentices and technicians, and our ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate strong people skills, preferably with previous supervisory experience. Strong communication skills are required to communicate effectively with internal and external colleagues at a senior level and represent the department at meetings.
A valid full UK manual driving is essential for this role as the postholder will be required to drive students and staff on field trips.
For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.
