Applications are invited for a an experienced, skilled, and ambitious postdoctoral research associate to join the team of Dr. Jenna Gregory in the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) at the Foresterhill campus of the University of Aberdeen, to undertake innovative research into the role and distribution of TDP-43 misfolding across motor networks in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
We are seeking candidates with a mix of wet and dry lab expertise. Wet lab skills will be handling mouse and human tissue and applying the molecular techniques including BaseScope, immunohistochemistry and histological special stains. Dry lab skills will be primarily analytical and statistical (handling complex datasets such as integrating clinical and experimental data) and digital image analysis (QuPath/Cell profiler).
Key responsibilities include; 1) the design of experiments to investigate the role and distribution of TDP-43 pathology across motor networks, 2) the generation of data from molecular wet-lab experiments and investigations, 3) the analysis of datasets arising from experiments and investigations, and 4) contributing to ongoing research in the in the group including bench supervision and support of students.
The successful applicant will hold a PhD-level degree in biological/medical sciences or a related relevant topic. Candidates with a broad skill set spanning wet-laboratory, and data analytical approaches are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge of molecular techniques and technologies are essential, with emphasis on skills in immunohistochemistry, RNA ISH, and histological staining, along with experience and/or familiarity with digital image analysis (e.g. using QuPath or similar). Strong data science skills i.e., data analysis and statistics are essential. Research experience in neuroscience, ALS, and/or other neurodegenerative diseases is very desirable. Applicants should have experience in the design, analysis, and publication of experiments, with a willingness to supervise students and engage with laboratory management tasks.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7, £45,585 – £49,794 per annum, and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
