Lecturer (Education) in Physical Geography (0.25 FTE)

The successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of physical geography modules in the School of Natural and Built Environment. The applicant will engage with the teaching, organisation and administration of the BSc Geography programmes modules within the school: coordinating modules, delivering lectures, leading practicals, conducting tutorials and participating in educational activities as required.

You will be required to:

• Teach physical and environmental geography at undergraduate level, informed by a thorough knowledge of professional geographical skills.
• Utilise a range of teaching methods in the design and delivery of teaching and assessment activities in BSc Geography which enhance student employability and reflect subject-specific and transferable skill requirements.
• Develop approaches to teaching and learning, which are appropriate for the subject area and deliver outstanding learning outcomes.
• Contribute to the development of a variety of innovative teaching programmes associated with the subject specialism.
• Supervise student research projects which may involve an extensive range of topic areas both inside and outside the post-holder's own specialist area.
• Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students accordingly and provide constructive feedback.
• Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery, through analysis of feedback.
• Contribute to the development and coordination of physical geography modules (including GGY1009 Physical Geography: Earth, Wind and Water, and GGY2058 Global Environmental Change) and align to curriculum development.

About the person:

The successful applicant must demonstrate:

• A primary degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) in a relevant area (or closely related discipline as appropriate).
• Hold or be about to complete a PhD in Geography, Geology, Earth Science, Ecology or Environmental Science.
• Experience in teaching undergraduate geography students
• Experience in providing pastoral care to students.
• Evidence of educational experience as below:
  • Demonstrable teaching experience using a range of teaching methods to geography students. This may include tutorial delivery, lecturing, laboratory or computer practical demonstrations, seminar teaching or supervision of research projects.
  • Experience of using digital platforms in the teaching of physical geography.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
