THE PROJECT
The University of Essex, in partnership with Geologix, offers an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to integrate new machine learning and generative AI capabilities into Geologix, aiming to deliver automated, actionable insights to the energy sector.
This post is fixed-term for 27 months and is based at Geologix’ offices in Norwich.
DUTIES OF THE POST
The duties of the post will include:
- Analysing Geologix's software, data, and business models to understand technical terminology, software characteristics, and data structure.
- Creating synthetic samples of daily reports to highlight interesting cases for evaluating future models.
- Applying Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to detect underlying structures in report components and identify connections between different reports.
- Developing a system to analyse extracts from well reports, understand drilling and operational issues, their severity, and mitigations, and assess the performance of these methods using Transformers models and Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Mapping connections from extracts to physical characteristics of the well and the subsurface, using composite well logs and validating new methodologies.
- Embedding NLP and ML techniques to extract relevant geological features at depths.
- Sharing knowledge with the company and disseminating findings through academic or professional channels.
- Developing and field testing the insight’s report module with visualisation features, generating connections between their text extracts, and providing summaries of encountered issues and mitigations.
- Ensuring high standards and continuous development plan for product launch and beta testing.
- Acting as project lead, to progress the project and ensure milestones are met to a timely manner.
- Embedding technology, training and upskilling company staff.
- Participating in academic and/or industrial conferences and other events, to disseminate and present research outcomes to the wider community.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- BSc and MSc in Computer Science, Maths, AI, Data Science, or equivalent commercial experience.
- A deep understanding of the principles and best practice on NLP, Machine Learning, and Large Language Modelling (LLMs).
- Advanced programming skills in appropriate languages such as Python.
- Able to handle large and complex data.
- Understanding/Experience of modern software development practices (e.g., CI/CD).
- Experience designing LLMs and undertaking testing and iteration.
- An excellent communicator, who can explain theoretical and technical concepts to non-experts.
- Ability to contribute to the drafting of academic papers for publication in leading journals and conferences.
- Excellent grasp of written and spoken English.
- Able to lead a complex project with multiple competing priorities.
- Team player who can also take initiative and work unsupervised.

4 days (Monday to Thursday) office-based and Friday from home. This pattern may change to fully office based on business needs.
