King’s College London, School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) provides an outstanding multi-disciplinary environment for the pursuit of cutting-edge cardiovascular and metabolic research ( https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms). We study the fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological processes that underly normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic function in state-of-the art core facilities. We drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, across Guy’s, FWB, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses.

About the role

We are looking to recruit a technician who will contribute to the smooth running of the SCMMS research laboratory space, especially for the groups based at the James Black Centre at our Denmark Hill campus. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to a number of technical objectives including but not limited to, health and safety compliance, good laboratory practice, maintenance of equipment and smooth running of the laboratories, interactions with external stakeholders (engineers, delivery staff, maintenance and security personnel etc.), ordering goods and act as a point of contact for staff enquiries.

Specific expertise in the isolation and culture of cardiomyocytes is a bonus.

The post would suit someone looking to pursue a career in technical operational delivery. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated team player and able to work well with a technical team to deliver a comprehensive technical service across multiple locations. The successful candidate will be able to work independently when appropriate, possessing excellent planning and communication skills and able to prioritise their own workload effectively. They will be expected to build relationships with a wide set of stakeholders across academic, technical, finance, health & safety, estates & facilities directorates to support the research and educational objectives of the School.

This is a full-time post, and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you 

Essential criteria 

• Minimum level 3 qualification, e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other Level 3 qualification, plus work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts OR Considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts. 
• Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSciTech or RSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs. 
• Knowledge and practical use of a range of technical skills, in particular cell culture, and their environmental impact.
• Extensive technical experience and knowledge of a range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and the environment impact.
• Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills.  
• Proactive and responsive to contacts in immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g., suppliers) to build relationships and network. 
• Solutions-focused self-starter, with strong planning and analytical skills, able to manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision.
• Good working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.  

Desirable criteria

• Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required. 
• Isolation and culture of cardiomyocytes. 
• Experience in small animal models of disease.
• The ideal candidate will already hold a Home Office animal license (PIL) or will be willing to train to obtain a PIL.
