Research Fellow - Advanced Hydrogen Powered Aircraft: RIED Tools

Queen's University Belfast - Engineering and Technology

Location: Belfast
Salary: £39,922
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 27th August 2024
Closes: 9th September 2024
Job Ref: 24/112172

Target H2 is a multi-partner and multi-university / industrial collaboration seeking to innovate design and manufacturing/assembly processes for hydrogen powered aircraft. The project will address the challenges of applying innovative research into liquid hydrogen management to the design of the structures and manufacturing / assembly processes for the on-board, cryogenic storage of liquid hydrogen on conceptual aircraft structures. The work will bring together research and engineering expertise from Queen’s University Belfast, University of Strathclyde, Cranfield University and Spirit Aerospace.

The team at Queen’s University Belfast are seeking a researcher with expertise in the development of novel aircraft structures, the means by which they can accommodate hydrogen storage systems and the methods required to assemble and support them. Our approach will include traditional structural design methods as well as the use of natural language processing and artificial intelligence to develop novel configurations for the structural integration of liquid hydrogen storage solutions on passenger aircraft (metal and composite).

The Research Fellow will join our network of collaborators to drive future innovations in technology and enhance our capabilities in advanced aircraft systems. They will assist in the planning and delivery of the research activity specifically to develop concepts at the frontier of net zero aircraft system development, advanced computer aided methods and AI driven design. They will also lead the development on the use of advanced computational methods to streamline aspects of the manufacturing design processes – specifically structural integration. In this case a key aspect will be applying highly innovative design methods from the ReImagining Engineering Design Programme (RIED) to see if novel, yet practical, designs can be developed. They will then digitally assess the benefits of using such advanced technologies to enhance and simplify engineering design processes.
