About us

Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Multicellular Morphogenesis Lab, established in the Spring of 2023 by Dr Alessandro Mongera. In line with our colleagues at CDB, we strive to maintain a question-driven approach to developmental biology, backed-up by the application of the very latest in research technologies.

The successful applicant will conduct research as part of the HFSP-funded research project: “Mechanical control of hidden embryonic boundaries”. In this project, we will dissect the role of mechanics in dictating the earliest fate decisions during zebrafish gastrulation.

About the role

The postholder will focus on building transgenic tools to visualize and modulate tissue mechanical states in vivo; they will map changes in tissue mechanical properties using cutting-edge biophysical tools and live imaging, including both light-sheet and super-resolution microscopy; they will be encouraged to develop their independent line of research.

The responsibilities of the postholder will include carrying out vigorous, high-level research into the interplay of morphogenesis and differentiation, interfacing with other team members and HFSP collaborators, including the Almuedo-Castillo Group at CABD, Spain and the Serra Group at UCSD, USA.

The post is an open-ended contract, available from 01/11/2024 or as soon as possible thereafter and is funded until 31/10/2025 in the first instance.
