The UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Department (u.nu/i8gl6) produces internationally leading research and integrated hands-on education in the heart of London, with close links to major teaching hospitals and industries, and is one of the biggest in the country in this field. At AXIm (u.nu/4u1wk) we develop novel X-ray image formation techniques and deploy them with the latest developments in source and detector technology. We now have an opportunity for an Experimental Officer position in the AXIm Advanced X-ray Imaging group (u.nu/4u1wk) at the UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Department (u.nu/i8gl6). The post is part of the NXCT (nxct.ac.uk) the UK’s National Research Facility for lab-based X-ray Computed Tomography funded by the EPSRC. At the NXCT we bring together world-leading capability in lab-based XCT from the universities of Manchester, Southampton, Warwick, University College London and Diamond Light Source.
The NXCT provides an unparalleled combination of 3D imaging facilities and data analysis, research knowledge and technical experience to support users that have never worked with X-ray scanning before and to help advanced users conduct exciting new experiments. Together, our five partners provide a unique and diverse shared capability to the UK. The NXCT will provide: access to state-of-the-art X-ray instruments; technical support for new and existing users; the expertise to design complex experiments; and the infrastructure and resources to analyse 3D and 4D data.
At UCL we are developing new capacity and capability in laboratory-based X-ray phase-contrast imaging for the industry and the research community. You will focus on the design, procurement, integration and testing of the new, custom-built imaging systems and will be the point of contact for the users and support them in collecting X-ray CT data, either working together or on their behalf. You will work as part of a team, including with internal and external colleagues to maintain equipment, run experiments, supervise the facility environment, ensuring safety documentation is complete and safety training is provided to all users as required.
Ideal candidates should have a background and a PhD in a STEM discipline or demonstrate equivalent experience. Previous experience in the fields of imaging, microscopy, phase contrast or X-rays will be considered as advantages. Above all, highly motivated, creative and keen on collaborating individuals, capable of independent reasoning and excited about innovative avenues of research will be successful in the selection.
Contract The position is offered as full-time until 31/10/2025
