Please note that this post will be based at the University of Lincoln’s Maritime Studies Centre at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.

As a Lecturer in Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) you will be based at BRNC Dartmouth as part of the Maritime Studies Centre staff in a teaching, scholarly and professional practice (TSPP) position. Your primary role will be teaching applied and theoretical meteorology and oceanography to naval officers embarking on their professional careers. You will be knowledgeable in aspects of meteorology and oceanography that relate to maritime operations, with a particular emphasis on their relevance in a military setting. You will be expected to be enthusiastic and engaging with the students, able to convey the critical importance of this subject in naval warfare.

The role will include a number of key enabling aspects including Personal Tutoring, academic outreach activities, marking and assessment and Continuous Professional Development including research outputs and pedagogical innovation. For Lecturer candidates, scholarly practice and associated research will be a priority. For Senior Lecturer candidates, there will be a requirement for academic leadership and management including Programme and Module leadership, development, and modernisation.

We are looking for a motivated, innovative, and collaborative expert who is able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Individuals with experience of working within the maritime sector, particularly with specialist METOC experience, are particularly encouraged to apply. This is also an ideal development post for someone with a growing expertise in METOC who wishes to develop their professional expertise, knowledge, and scholarly practice.

You will need to have a relevant honours degree, a Masters Degree or equivalent, and ideally a PhD in a related discipline. A Post-graduate qualification or equivalent in Higher Education or Teaching and Learning is desirable and if not possessed you will be supported in achieving Higher Education Association (HEA) status.

Please be aware that an offer for this position is conditional on the ability to obtain a BPSS background check, followed by a successful application for a UK national security clearance. Further information on the checks and process involved in both are available at Government baseline personnel security standard – GOV.UK and UK Security Vetting: Applicant – GOV.UK respectively.

For an informal discussion, please contact Dr Mark Ashman, Senior Lecturer in Meteorology and Oceanography, at MAshman@lincoln.ac.uk.

Please note that the first round of interviews will be held via Teams on Friday 20 September 2024. If you are successful at this stage, the second round of interviews will be held in-person at BRNC Dartmouth on Friday 27 September 2024.
