Scientific Customer Support (Physics / Electronics)

Ossila Limited

Location: Sheffield
Salary: £28,000 to £32,000 Depending on experience
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 4th September 2024
Closes: 30th September 2024

We are looking for someone with a degree in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering to join our product teams and provide technical support to our customers. As someone who enjoys learning, teaching, and building relationships with academics and researchers, you will become an asset to the global scientific community and key to our mission to enable science.

As our product portfolio and customer base has expanded, so too has the number of technical support requests we receive (usually via email). These inquiries range from simple to highly complex, often demanding a thorough understanding of our products and their functionalities.

Our equipment covers a wide range of fields from electrical and optical characterisation to thin film coatings. While prior knowledge of these fields is not essential (although advantageous), an ability to learn a commensurate range of scientific theory and practical techniques is essential. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shadow the current technical support staff as part of your initial training.

The role will involve the following core responsibilities:

  • Providing first line customer support for technical inquiries via email and phone.
  • Liaising with R&D team to provide answers to specialist questions.
  • Passing relevant customer feedback to the R&D/content teams.
  • Providing occasional video or in-person demonstrations.
  • Reading, following and improving our written guides and manuals, and working with the R&D team to help produce support documentation for new products.
  • Assisting the content generation team to generate new multimedia content.

While laboratory work will not be a significant part of the daily routine, it will be an important part of both training and providing follow-up support and demonstrations.

About You

The successful candidate will be a great communicator both with customers and colleagues in verbal and written form and must have the following specific traits:

  • A degree in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering (or significant equivalent knowledge).
  • Experience with either teaching or customer support.
  • Strong scientific communications skills.
  • Be able to efficiently learn new scientific topics.
  • Be practical and able to pick up new laboratory techniques easily.
  • Excellent English and IT skills and the ability to create high-quality digital content.

In addition, we are looking for the below soft skills:

  • Good attention to detail.
  • Fantastic teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Highly organised and self-motivated with excellent prioritisation and time management skills.
  • An aptitude for problem solving.
