The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 35 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience in these areas underpinned by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, placing us 1st in the UK for research impact and 3rd in the UK for research quality overall (REF 2021).
Our linguistics expertise covers Theoretical and Descriptive linguistics, Applied linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, TEFL and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. We offer a wide range of languages including French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish that can be taken at degree level from beginners to advanced levels following the Common European Languages Framework.
The Department is now seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time ASE Lecturer in Modern Languages (German) from 2nd January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Duties of the Role
The appointed candidate will be responsible for delivering modules in pre- and post-A-Level German, in addition to teaching on our German strand of Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. You will also supervise BA and MA projects and contribute to the successful administration and management of the department.

Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have a relevant postgraduate degree qualification and/or equivalent professional experience or practice and will have fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level.
Full professional proficiency in German and the ability to teach in German is essential, as well as similar proficiency in English. Professional qualifications in translation, interpreting and/or subtitling, in addition to the ability to contribute to other areas in the department, would be highly advantageous.
You will have proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education in imaginative, engaging and innovative ways.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for this post, along with proven ability to collaborate with colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and module delivery.
