About the role

Promoting academic resilience: A closer look at the role of contextual, student, school-based, and civic factors, is a project funded by the ESRC with the primary objective of developing a deeper understanding of how learner-level factors such as socio-emotional skills, civic and citizenship education, and school-level factors, such as school leadership, management, and accountability processes, are related to student learning outcomes, particularly exceptional performance, in disadvantaged settings. It will achieve this aim through:

  • A literature review of the findings produced by international large-scale assessments, situated within a broader developing country literature, including considerations of civic and citizenship education.
  • Analysis of secondary data produced by international large-scale assessments.
  • As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

The post holder will assist the PI and the research team by typically:

  • Preparing, conducting, and recording the outcome of data analyses.
  • Analysing data using statistical techniques (e.g., HLM, MSEM, LCA, etc.).
  • Conducting literature and database searches.
  • Providing support to PI and other research staff with project management (e.g., administrative tasks, organising meetings and corresponding with partners).
  • Contributing to the production of research reports and publications.
  • Participating regularly in group meetings and preparing and delivering presentations to the research team.
  • Contributing to the planned dissemination activities (e.g., policy briefs, podcasts, conference presentations).

This role is offered on a part time (7.3 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected end date of 13/04/2025.

About you 

  • Strong Quantitative Skills: A deep understanding of statistical methods and proficiency in using statistical software like R, MPlus, and Stata.
  • Interest in Civic and Citizenship Education: A genuine interest in the field of civic and citizenship education, as this aligns with the current project's focus on understanding its relationship to student learning outcomes.
  • Research Experience: Previous experience in conducting research, particularly in educational settings.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: The ability to effectively communicate research findings, both verbally and in writing.
  • Organisation and Time Management: The candidate should be highly organised and able to manage their workload efficiently to meet project deadlines.
  • Team Player: The ability to collaborate effectively with the Principal Investigator, research team, and external partners is crucial.
  • Creativity and Innovation: A willingness to think critically and explore innovative research approaches.
  • Attention to Detail: The candidate should pay strong attention to detail, especially when working with data and producing research outputs
